Programming Skills (6)
40+ years designing and developing custom automation, production machinery and capital equipment. Experience includes high-speed assembly, material handling, conveyors, mechanisms, pneumatics, servo/precision motion, inspection and measurement systems, semiconductor equipment, medical-device automation, foundry machinery and web-processing equipment. Hands-on work from requirements and concept development through mechanical design, calculations, component selection, drawings and BOMs, design reviews, machine safety, build support, commissioning, troubleshooting and production improvement. Experienced working directly with customers, controls engineers, fabricators, suppliers and system integrators to take equipment from concept through successful operation.
Mechanical design of custom automation and capital equipment; assemblies, machine layouts, mechanisms, drawings, BOMs, GD&T, component selection and design reviews. SolidWorks PDM experience including implementation.
Hands-on PLC programming earlier in career plus extensive integration of Allen-Bradley-controlled machinery. Machine startup, commissioning, troubleshooting and multidisciplinary system integration.
Extensive pneumatic-system design and component selection for custom automation. Frequent preferred supplier on high-speed assembly equipment.
Hands-on Siemens PLC programming on industrial machinery, including foundry equipment; installation and commissioning experience in the U.S. and Europe.
Mechanical/system design experience with SuperTrak intelligent conveyor technology; designed the first SuperTrak-based system at ATS Chicago for automated syringe assembly.
About Me
I am a Professional Engineer and hands-on automation and machine-design engineer with 40+ years of experience developing custom machinery and capital equipment.
My work has ranged from high-speed medical-device assembly and semiconductor equipment to material handling, foundry machinery, battery manufacturing, web processing, inspection and analytical systems. I work from initial requirements and machine concepts through mechanical design, supplier coordination, build support, commissioning and troubleshooting.
I enjoy the difficult projects—the machine that still needs a concept, the design that needs an experienced review, or the equipment problem that needs to be understood and solved. I work comfortably with customers, machine builders, controls engineers, suppliers and manufacturing teams.
My goal is practical engineering: safe, buildable, maintainable equipment that works reliably in production.
Skilled Trades (2)
Extensive experience supporting custom automation and production machinery through build, startup, commissioning and operation. Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, controls and system-integration problems; perform root-cause analysis; develop practical engineering corrections; and support safety, reliability, productivity and cycle-time improvements. Experience ranges from individual custom machines to large installed equipment fleets, including semiconductor equipment operating in Intel factories worldwide.
40+ years developing custom machinery and automation incorporating workholding, part location, assembly, processing and inspection fixtures. Experience includes high-speed automated assembly, medical-device manufacturing, material handling, semiconductor/PCB equipment and other production machinery. Design work includes concepts, mechanisms, component selection, pneumatics, sensors, tolerancing/GD&T, manufacturability, drawings, build support and troubleshooting.
