Programming Skills (8)
From a keep it simple stupid plc 5 using block transfers, to a control logix using event driven tasks in part tracking arrays using AOIs to the 9s. I live and breath AB. Its my bread and butter. Program conversions, new installs, sil2 redundancy, safety programming.. If I have not touched it, I simply have not touched it yet. I'm a ladder programmer.
I was the camera guy for over 62 cameras on an automtoive line at one point. I've used them with fiducial calibrations to match Vision system workplanes with robot workplanes. I know how to store images from the camera, and then use the filmstrip in insight to simulate 1000s of real time photos to debug line, blob, historgram, and pattern matching tools. I have a lot of trial and error knowledge based around lighting, and hotspots. I know how to use line tools instead of pattern matching tools to extremely reduce cycles times.
I've met guys who can look at positions and mentally recreate and troubleshoot. Sadly, that is not me. I've done a lot of work on the PLC and Vision side of robots. Typically I keep the brains inside the PLC and use the robot as a device that cycles through a loop, and waits for a robot move update from the PLC. I've done 3point and 4 point teaches to set up tooling cordinates, and have jogged and reteached points on robots. I know when to use point to point moves, and less precise moves for cycle times. I'm not typically the full stack robot design guy. I can get the job done and make it run, but there are outstanding professionals out there who are much better and faster than me.
I can used stored procedures to read/write to a plc and I can populate databases with machine data. I have entry level knowledge of SQL queries and have spent some time pulling data to determine machine issues to help IT. I am not a SQL guru.
This is not my prefered brand of PLC. I have working knowledge of the platform, but prefer AB. I can fully design a system with TIA, but I didn't devote my career to it.
About Me
I have traveled the United States working on various controls equipment. I’ve done projects as small as a program conversion to a different manufacturer, or as large as 35 million dollar projects for Amazon. I can electrically troubleshoot a panel without prints (not preferred), turn a wrench, and have the people skills to calmly manage customers and give them confidence.
Skilled Trades (4)
With or without prints. I can reverse engineer the panel, look up the part numbers, find the quick start guides, keyword search the faults, and retrofit a smiliar part. I don't bend conduit, but I can consult on it.
I once started up a line running 46% scrap where the design team had jumped ship. It was at 2% when I left. First, process engineering is about understanding your bottle necks to get more parts out of the machine.Second its about OEE and finding solutions to minimizing downtime either through process changes or writing standard operating procedures.
Engineers will look at the problem and overlook a practicle solution. I've done my best to improve there. I typically get the phone call after maintenance can't fix it. Its been that way for a decade.
Software Competencies (4)
Professional Competencies (9)
I've designed small machines or sections of a machine with others.
I can sniff packets with wireshark, verify coms with ping, and determine IP addresses on unknown devices. I've fixed feed back loops on unmanaged switches taking down the entire network. I've found cables over 300ft with my meter's length tester, and i've replaced and made thousands of RJ45 connectors. I have buisness class cisco switch in my home lab with 6 PLCs from various brands. I'm a little meh with routing tables if I dont have a network map, and most of the time I never have access to the switch, but if theres a duplicate IP on my network, I can go unplug the intended IP and tell you the mac and device type of what is duplicated before I go physically find it for IT.
Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet IP, RS232, RS485, Device Net, Control Net, Profibus, ASI bus, Static I.P.s, Switch routing, Direct wire, Factory Talk Transaction Manager, EDS files, Add-on Instructions, Brother Mill Communications, Robot Communications, Light databasing
Vision does not like Z axis, or changes in lighting. A few mm in a fixture can create variences which cause false positives. I have worked on systems that used vision and actually hitt 99.5% accuracy, but they used pulse triggers that took multiple pictures as the part moved. Vision is finiky. Its not a tool for every senario. I can solve problems with cameras for you, and I know a ton about lighting and the tools available with cognex. I can attach them to conveyor encoders and robot cordinate planes.
I prefer to keep it simple, but can tackle whatever you throw at me. The one's I've touched are Allen Bradley, Logix 5000, Logix 500, Siemens TIA, Automation Direct click, Modicon, and Omron NJ,
My largest project is 35 mil.
Scada can be hit or miss depending on heavyly it was programmed. I'm good at the machine side of things. I'm not good at the software dev side where guys are creating Apps and API calls over the internet. I've mostly used it for databasing stations, and part numbers for part recalls, and creating overviews of the entire plant with stastics.
I leave documents for the guy behind me. As it should be. I'm not a technical writer.
Applications (18)
CNC mill PLC integration.
I've progammed various HMIs. Siemens, AB, Red Lion, Aveva, Automation Direct and Ignition.
Keyence laser marking, and mechanical pin stamping.
Keyence encoder based paint marking for barcodes and text onto parts.
Reverse engineering/troubleshooting, Continuous motion, and precision motion.
Networking, Lockout Tagout, IO Checkouts, Replacing static IPs on devices, finding loose connections, trending IO, reading a print, and using a meter.
If you give me the motor name plate, and a drive part number, I can make it run. I have several of the PF525 parameters memorized, but most VFDs I use the PDF manual and move.
