Marietta, GA Mechatronics is a hybrid consisting of Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science Engineering focused on designing and building systems that utilize all three disciplines. Senior Thesis Project (2012) Worked in a group with three other mechatronics students to design and build a cartesian style pick and place sort machine utilizing machine vision. The frame was built out of 80/20 extruded aluminum in a 3' x 3' x 3' cube. Motion was provided by three NEMA 17 Stepper Motors, one for each axis. The controls were accomplished by utilizing an Arduino UNO. The sorting logic was handled in MATLAB with the Image Processing Toolbox using edge and shape detection of images captured from a webcam on the z-axis. The center and shape of all objects in view of the camera was put in a (.txt) file that the Arduino automatically read and started the process of sorting different shapes and sizes into predefined bins. The end effecter was a simple rubber-filled container that when lowered onto an object molded around it, and then utilized vacuum to squeeze onto the object.
