Top Welding Certifications in 2026: What Each Takes and the Work It Opens

Welding is one of the few trades where a single certification test can change the work you qualify for in a matter of weeks. No four-year degree required. No years of waiting for a promotion. Pass the test, update your profile, and apply to the contracts that ask for it.

The Welding Certification Ladder in 2026

General Welder (no certifications): the starting point. AWS Certified Welder (CW): a performance test on a weld specimen. Structural Welder: structural steel work. Pipe Welder (6G certified): pipe welded in the fixed 45-degree position. Pipe Welder (6G + travel): the same certification on field and traveling work. Certified Welding Inspector (CWI): inspection and code compliance. Robotic Welding Specialist: programming and running robotic arc welding cells.

What a welder is paid depends on the certifications they hold, the work they take and whether they travel. Certifications are the primary driver.

Certification #1: AWS Certified Welder (CW)

Issuing body: American Welding Society. Cost: $35 test fee + facility ($200-$500 total). Prerequisites: None.

Performance test only — weld a specimen, inspector evaluates. No written exam. Start with GMAW (MIG) or FCAW (flux core) for manufacturing. SMAW (stick) for structural/field. GTAW (TIG) for highest rates. AWS requires online-only applications as of January 15, 2026.

Certification #2: 6G Pipe Position Test

Cost: $300-$800. Prerequisites: 2+ years pipe welding.

The gold standard. Welding a pipe joint at fixed 45 degrees — combines overhead, vertical, horizontal in one test. 6G pipe welders work oil/gas, petrochemical, nuclear. A traveling contract shows its rate and any per diem the company posted before you apply, and a 6G certification is what many of them ask for.

Certification #3: AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

Cost: $1,100 exam + $1,000-$3,000 prep. Prerequisites: 5+ years welding OR degree + 2 years.

Most recognized credential in welding. Qualifies you to inspect, verify code compliance, approve/reject work. CWIs earn more because of liability — they stamp their name on reports. D1.1 Structural Welding Code endorsement is most commonly requested.

Certification #4: AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector (SCWI)

Cost: $1,250 exam. Prerequisites: CWI + 6 years inspection + 15 years total.

Highest inspection credential AWS offers. Opens chief inspector, quality manager, project manager roles.

Certification #5: Certified Robotic Arc Welding (CRAW)

Cost: $200-$500 test + $2,000-$5,000 training.

Fastest-growing welding certification. Validates robotic arc welding programming and operation. A manual welder who adds CRAW and FANUC or Yaskawa programming can apply to robotic welding contracts as well as manual ones.

Certification #6: API 1104 (Pipeline Welding)

Cost: $500-$1,000. Standard for pipeline welding in oil and gas. Combined with 6G, it opens pipeline work.

Certification #7: Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS)

Cost: $1,100 exam. Prerequisites: 5+ years supervision. Credential for managing welding operations.
