AVTEC, located in Seward, Alaska, is the state's premier public vocational training institution, operated by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. AVTEC offers intensive, hands-on training in Industrial Electricity and Electronics, covering AC/DC theory, motor controls, PLC programming, industrial wiring, and National Electrical Code compliance. The Welding and Non-Destructive Testing program provides AWS certification preparation and training in specialized processes including pipe welding, structural welding, and non-destructive examination methods. AVTEC's Power Plant Technology program is one of the few in the nation specifically designed for remote power generation — training operators and technicians for diesel, hydroelectric, and wind power facilities in rural Alaska communities. Programs run 6 to 18 months with dormitory housing available on campus. AVTEC maintains a job placement rate exceeding 85%, with graduates employed across Alaska's oil and gas, mining, utilities, and construction industries. Tuition is among the most affordable in the state, and the Alaska Performance Scholarship covers eligible students.
