California
California Civil Code Section 1786.22
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Visual Inspection: Visually inspect your consumer file during normal business hours
- Written Summary: Obtain a written summary of all information in your file
- One Free Report: Receive one free copy of your file annually
- Reinvestigation: Request reinvestigation of disputed information at no charge
California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act
Under California law, an investigative consumer report may include information about your:
- Character
- General reputation
- Personal characteristics
- Mode of living
You may request, in writing, information about the nature and scope of any investigative consumer report. Contact the Consumer Reporting Agency directly to exercise these rights.
New York
New York Correction Law, Article 23-A
If you are a New York resident and an adverse decision is made based on your criminal history, you may request:
- A copy of Article 23-A from the employer
- Written notice of the reasons for the adverse decision
- Consideration of rehabilitation factors
Under Article 23-A, employers must consider:
- The public policy of encouraging employment of persons with criminal records
- The specific duties of the job
- The bearing of your criminal record on your fitness for the job
- Time elapsed since the offense
- Your age at the time of the offense
- Seriousness of the offense
- Evidence of rehabilitation
Washington State
Washington Fair Credit Reporting Act (RCW 19.182)
If you are a Washington resident, you have the right to:
- Receive a free copy of your consumer report if adverse action is taken
- Know the name and address of the consumer reporting agency
- Dispute inaccurate information directly with the agency
- Add a statement to your file explaining any disputed information
Minnesota
Minnesota Statutes Section 13C.001-13C.04
If you are a Minnesota resident:
- You have the right to a free copy of your consumer file upon written request
- The consumer reporting agency must notify you of your right to receive a free copy
Oklahoma
Oklahoma Consumer Credit Act
If you are an Oklahoma resident, you have the right to request a free copy of your consumer report from the consumer reporting agency.
Maine
Maine Fair Credit Reporting Act
If you are a Maine resident:
- You have the right to a free copy of your consumer report upon request
- The consumer reporting agency must notify you of this right
Massachusetts
Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 93 Section 52-68
If you are a Massachusetts resident:
- You are entitled to a free copy of any report furnished to a third party
- You have the right to request disclosure of the nature and substance of the information
New Jersey
New Jersey Fair Credit Reporting Act
If you are a New Jersey resident:
- You have the right to a free copy of your consumer file once during any 12-month period
- You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information
Vermont
Vermont Fair Credit Reporting Statute
If you are a Vermont resident:
- You are entitled to a free copy of your consumer report upon written request
Oregon

If you are an Oregon resident:
- You are entitled to a free copy of your consumer report upon written request

If you are a Connecticut resident applying for employment:
- The employer must provide you a copy of any background check at no charge
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Information Act
If you are a Pennsylvania resident:
- You may challenge the accuracy of a criminal record
- Contact the State Police to dispute criminal history records

How to Exercise Your Rights
Step 1: Contact the Consumer Reporting Agency
The consumer reporting agency that prepared your report is identified in the Pre-Adverse Action or Adverse Action Notice you received.
Step 2: Submit a Written Request
Include:
- Your full legal name
- Current address
- Social Security Number (last 4 digits)
- Date of birth
- Copy of government-issued ID
Step 3: Specify Your Request
Indicate whether you want to:
- Obtain a copy of your file
- Dispute specific information
- Add a statement to your file
