How to create a contractor profile

Build a profile that shows your automation expertise and gets you found by the companies hiring. About 30 minutes, and it's free.

1

Sign up for Automate America

Go to automateamerica.com and click "Sign Up." Choose "Professional" as your account type, enter your email, create a secure password, and verify your email to activate your account.

Tip: Use a professional email address you actually check.

2

Add your basic information

Complete your header: full name (only first name + last initial shows publicly), professional title, location, and a clean headshot. Your title should name your primary expertise.

Tip: Profiles with a professional photo get far more views.

3

List your technical skills

Organize skills by category: PLC brands (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), robots (FANUC, ABB), languages (Python, C#), HMI/SCADA platforms, and industry experience.

Tip: Be specific — "ControlLogix" is more searchable than just "Allen-Bradley."

4

Add certifications

List vendor certifications (Rockwell, Siemens), safety credentials (TÜV FSE), and industry certifications (ISA CCST). Upload your certificate documents so they display on your profile.

Tip: Certifications on your profile raise employer confidence.

5

Describe your experience

Add work history with detail: companies, project types, technologies, and measurable results. Focus on relevant automation work, and include both employment and contract engagements.

Tip: Quantify it — "reduced downtime 40%" beats "improved efficiency."

6

Upload portfolio projects

Show your best work: system diagrams, HMI screenshots (sensitive info removed), and short project summaries describing the challenge and the technologies used.

Tip: Before/after photos of automation projects land hard.

7

Set your preferences

Configure availability, rate, travel willingness, and preferred contract types. Set your status: actively seeking, open to offers, or not available.

Tip: An accurate availability status tells employers when you can start.

8

Write your bio

Craft a 150–300 word summary of your expertise, specializations, and what sets you apart. First person, authentic, no fluff.

Tip: Name the specific industries or project types you excel in.

Profile completion checklist

Hit all of these and your profile reads as complete to employers and to the matching.
