If you are an ABB paint system expert and ready to make an immediate impact on a live production system, this is your moment.
We are seeking an experienced ABB robot programmer with deep knowledge of ABB paint programming for a contract in Greer, South Carolina. This project involves two ABB IRB 5400 robots fitted with IRB 1000 applicators, working within an established paint line. The task is straightforward but mission-critical — adding an option to use two different purge solvents based on the material loaded when running a cleaning program.
The ideal candidate can step in and deliver results starting Friday August 15, 2025 through Sunday August 17, 2025. If needed, work could start the following week. Rates are competitive at $80/hour straight time, $104/hour over 40 hours, and $128/hour on Sundays and holidays. This position is open to all professionals authorized to legally work in the United States.
We expect this role to be filled quickly — update your Automate America profile and apply now.
The Opportunity
ABB paint robots have been a cornerstone of precision coating in automotive and industrial manufacturing for decades. The IRB 5400 series, in particular, has built a reputation for durability, accuracy, and flexibility. Paired with IRB 1000 applicators, these systems deliver high-quality, repeatable finishes while meeting strict environmental and efficiency standards.
For this contract, the programming modification will enhance operational flexibility during cleaning cycles, giving operators the ability to select between two purge solvents depending on the coating material. This might sound like a small change, but in the world of industrial painting it can significantly reduce downtime, improve solvent usage efficiency, and help maintain consistent quality when switching between materials.
ABB Paint System Expertise
A Brief History: ABB introduced the IRB 5400 series to meet the rising demand for automated painting that could handle complex geometries with minimal overspray. Over the years, advancements in atomizer technology, motion control, and paint process integration have kept ABB ahead in the automotive and appliance finishing markets.
Current Innovations: ABB’s latest paint technologies include energy-efficient atomizers, improved path accuracy through advanced controllers, and software tools that integrate with plant MES systems for real-time monitoring and optimization. The IRB 5400, in its modern configurations, can work with waterborne and solvent-based paints, electrostatic application, and multiple applicators, making it adaptable to diverse production needs (ABB Robotics IRB 5400 Product Page, ABB, 2025).
In paint lines like the one in Greer, SC, the IRB 1000 applicators excel in precision coating for both large panels and intricate parts. The upcoming modification will integrate seamlessly into the existing control logic, improving the cleaning program’s adaptability without disrupting the established production schedule.
